Introduced to the Senate on February 3, 2005. Referred to the Senate Education Committee, where it received a hearing on March 10. The committee voted to lay over the bill to work on the language for inclusion in the omnibus bill.

- SF 711 went through language changes and the revised version was included in Senator Steve Kelley's proposed Education Omnibus Bill on April 12. It was heard on April 14th and re-referred to Education Finance.
- On Thursday, May 5th, senate education omnibus bill SF 2267, which contains Health and Physical Education as Required Academic Standards language, passed the senate unanimously.
- The bill requires school districts to maintain their current health and physical education requirements for grades k-8 through 2007-2008. When revising their standards they have to consult the Department of Education's benchmarks. A half credit of both health and physical education will be required for high school graduation. SF 2267 passed along to the conference committee.

- On Wednesday, May 4th, house education omnibus bill HF 872 passed the house with amended language regarding Health and Physical Education as a Required Academic Standard.
- The bill requires school districts to maintain their current health and physical education instruction time for grades k-8 through 2007-2008. A half credit of both health and physical education will be required for high school graduation. HF 872 passed along to the conference committee.
