Initial Success for Sex Ed, First Ever Cuts to
Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Funding
President Obama has signed into law a cut of more than $14 million
to
these failed programs for Fiscal Year 2009. For more information, visit

REAL Act Introduced
Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act, authored by Congresswoman
Barbara Lee (CA) and Senator Frank Lautenberg (NJ), was introduced
March 17. The REAL Act would establish the first ever grant program for
responsible sex ed. Under the bill, sex education programs would be
age-appropriate, medically accurate and provide information about both

What's in Store for 2010?
President Obama's Budget
Blueprint for Fiscal Year 2010, released February 26, includes
promising language. While it doesn't specifically identify sex
education, it is a move forward. To read more about the analysis of the

Language from the Budget Blueprint:
Prevents Teen Pregnancy. The Budget supports state,
community-based and faith-based efforts to reduce teen pregnancy using
evidence based models. The program will fund models that stress the
importance of abstinence while providing medically-accurate and
age-appropriate information to youth who have already become sexually
active.
